Portal is a 2007 single-player first-person puzzle-platform video game developed and published by Valve Corporation. The game primarily comprises a series of puzzles that must be solved by teleporting the player's character and simple objects using the "the handheld portal device" – a device that can create inter-spatial portals between two flat planes. The player can move through one portal, and come out of the other, and vice versa; the game's unique physics also allow momentum to be retained through portals. In the game, the player-character, Chell, is challenged by a female artificial intelligence named GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) to complete each puzzle in the Aperture Science Enrichment Center using the portal gun with the promise of receiving cake when all the puzzles are completed.
The game requires creative use of portals to solve the puzzles and maneuver through the test chambers in the facility.

Portal was acclaimed as one of the most original games of 2007, despite its shortness, and received several Game of the Year awards from the press. The game was praised for its unique gameplay and darkly humorous story, created with the assistance of Erik Wolpaw and Chet Faliszek. It also received acclaim for the character of GLaDOS, voiced by Ellen McLain in the English-language version, and the end credits song "Still Alive" written by Jonathan Coulton for the game. As of 2011, over four million copies of the game have been sold since its release (not counting sales through the Steam platform).[11]

A highly anticipated sequel for the game was released in 2011. In addition to several new gameplay elements, Portal 2 features a much longer and more ambitious single-player campaign with some new characters, as well as a separate cooperative multiplayer mode.
